Lotts Wood Racing 19 Oct

LOTTS WOOD WELCOMES BACK GO-RIDE RACING

Saturday 19th October saw the very welcome return of racing to Lotts Wood organised jointly by Summit MTB and Palmer Park Velo. Eighty-eight young riders from across the region turned out to ride a shortened course for the Under 6 and Under 8s and the full course for the older riders, on what turned out to be a much dryer day than expected!

Racing began with the Under 6s, with Elise Hawkins from Palmer Park Velo triumphing in the U6 girls race, kicking off what was to be a great day for the Hawkins family who saw wins in three other categories! Summit riders Orla Barrowcliffe, Imogen Hollis and Katie Allsop finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.  The Under 6 boys race was won by Edward Moan.

In the Under 8 girls, Lucy Allsop from Summit MTB rode to a strong victory, with Summit riders Harris Hollis and Poppy Gregory finishing 6th and 7th, in what was both their first race on the rooty and hilly Lotts course.

Palmer Park scored a one-two-three in the Under 8 boys race, with Finn Hawkins bringing home the seventeen-strong pack.

The Under 10 Girls rode well on the longer lap of the whole Lotts course (including the ‘big bombhole’), with Southern Area XC Champion Alexa Hawkins from Palmer Park leading home Paige Laurie and Isabella Mitchell from Summit MTB in great second and third places.

Under 10 boys saw a hotly contested race between Palmer Park teammates Jamie Gostick and James Ashcroft, with Josh Gannon from Hemel Hempstead CC riding a great race to finish in bronze-medal position.

Under 12 Girls was another entirely Palmer Park affair with Emily Conn, Connie Stevens and Jenny Oliver filling the podium places.

Under 12 boys saw a strong showing from Summit MTB, with Tom Barrowcliffe and Oliver Raja-Brown finishing third and fourth and Seth Kanaris and Thomas Saunders finishing seventh and eighth. Winner on the day was the final member of the Palmer Park Hawkins dynasty – Angus!

The Under 14s and Under 16s rode together in the final races of the day, riding 3 laps and 4 laps respectively.  Callum MacLeod from Palmer Park won the U14 boys, hotly followed by James Creavin and Ben Broadhead from Summit into third and fourth places.

Emma Clarke from Palmer Park was the sole representative of the U16 girls and rode strongly to take her place on the top of the podium.

In the fastest and possibly most serious race of the day, Conall Brown (Hemel Hempstead CC) showed off his recent blistering form by storming around the 4 laps in top speed to take the gold-medal winners spot. James Saunders from Summit MTB rode into a strong third place.

Prizes at the end of the day were presented by Graham Macnamee from British Cycling, and everyone involved said what a great day it had been and that they were keenly looking forward to being able to race on our great course again.

Race Organisers and Go-Ride Coaches Clare Muir and Zoe Allsop from Summit MTB hope to be able to put on a similar event in the Spring of 2014. They commented, ‘It’s so fantastic to see our beautiful wood hosting such a fun and well-contested event again. The young riders all rode fantastically and they all seemed to be having a great time. Roll on 2014!’
