Summit’s new duathlon team made its debut at the super-tough Iceman race at Frimley on Saturday, 22nd January.
The five-man team of Matt Beevor, Mark Corns, Damon Lawrence, Ian McGovern and Simon North tackled one of the hardest off-road events in the south east of the country. Part of the Asics Off-Road Series, the 10kms run/18kms mountain bike/5kms run race was held in very cold, damp weather on a demanding hilly course.
“This was a baptism of fire for everyone in the team as none had tackled a duathlon at this level or duration before”, said team captain Dean Ricketts. “Our team spirit was strong and they can all be proud of themselves and their performance.”
The race began with a tough 10kms run featuring some big hills and sharp descents but the Summit team stuck together, with Simon and Damon leading the five into the first transition, closely followed by Mark then Matt and Ian. Simon then put in a blistering leg on the bike, whilst Matt moved up steadily through the field as Damon was slowed by an attack of cramp and Ian beset by drive train problems.
Simon sustained his pace in the final 5kms run to finish second in the 50-54 age category and 56th overall from 191 competitors. Matt came home five minutes later in 72nd followed by Damon in 89th to give Summit three finishers in the top half of the field. Mark came home two minutes later in 100th closely followed by Ian in 104th.
